Matthew Allen's mixed media surf art created by Matthew Allen for his "High Line" art show at Thalia Surf. "Low Line" is one of the frames from a 162 frame rotoscope surf animation that Matthew created for the show. A rotoscope animation is a frame-by-frame animation based on a video. It is a very involved process, with each image hand drawn. Hundreds of art pieces combine together to form a moving picture. Matthew took frames from the animation sequence and created art pieces using pencil, spray paint, and acrylic paint on wood board.
A former Surfer Magazine Art Director, Matthew is also the co-creator of the now retired boutique surf brand The Ryde. Much of his fine art and photography revolves around beach and surf culture. Matthew spends his days shooting photos and making art as well as creating illustrations for clients such as Ford Motor Company, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, Ron Herman, Champion, Vans, Bon Appetit, Food and Wine, and the Anaheim Ducks. Most of his other waking hours are spent surfing and making music.
