Join me at Thalassa Gallery in Rockport, MA this Friday Sept. 25th for the opening reception of my new show Fair Winds and Following Seas. Inspired by the maritime culture and history of Rockport, as well as my surfing roots. This show features hand carved block prints on vintage sail, vintage sail bag cuttings, and vintage paper. I've also created mixed media works on clay board, polaroid emulsion lifts, and acrylic paintings on vintage paper and sail cloth.
I will be showing my work alongside the ceramics of Boston-area ceramicist Zelda Rohrbach Mayer. Similar to my art practice, Zelda's work is shaped by the materials she works with. Zelda’s practice explores the intimate relationship between ceramics and social behavior. She activates her functional work through community dinners, workshops and pop-up events centered on gathering and ritual.
The exhibition takes its title from a traditional maritime blessing. The send off of “Fair winds and following seas” has long been offered at moments of transition and departure.
The expression suggests well wishes for conditions that will aid your journey. By letting go of control, embracing the unexpected, and trusting the process, the medium and material can become both collaborator and teacher.
