Original 69"x36" "Island Style" Linocut Print on Vintage Sailcloth

Southern California artist Matthew Allen sources vintage sails and marine canvas and brings them new life as pieces of art. This "Island Style" wall hanging was salvaged and then printed with a hand carved linocut print. The fabric was cut from a sail given to Matthew by the father of an old friend. The man exhumed the sail after he saw and heard about the art Matthew was creating on vintage sailcloths. The art for this piece was inspired by vintage Hawaiian fabric patterns and time spent surfing in Hawaii and California.

A former Surfer Magazine Art Director, Matthew is also the co-creator of the now retired boutique surf brand The Ryde. Much of his fine art and photography revolves around beach and surf culture. Matthew spends his days shooting photos and making art as well as creating illustrations for clients such as Ford Motor Company, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, Ron Herman, Champion, Vans, Bon Appetit, Food and Wine, and the Anaheim Ducks. Most of his other waking hours are spent surfing and making music.
