Original 26"x52" "Rising Sun" Linocut Print on Vintage Marine Salvage Fabric

Southern California artist Matthew Allen sources vintage sails and marine canvas and brings them new life as pieces of art. This "Rising Sun" wall hanging was salvaged and then printed with a hand carved linocut print. The fabric was sourced from the old surfboard bag of friend and Surfer's Journal photo editor Shawn Parkin. Matthew borrowed a Wegener Blue Gill "less fin" surfboard from Shawn and then petitioned Shawn to let him use the board bag as the base of this, and one other art piece. The art was inspired by Matthew's travels in "The Land of the Rising Sun", Japan.

A former Surfer Magazine Art Director, Matthew is also the co-creator of the now retired boutique surf brand The Ryde. Much of his fine art and photography revolves around beach and surf culture. Matthew spends his days shooting photos and making art as well as creating illustrations for clients such as Ford Motor Company, Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, Ron Herman, Champion, Vans, Bon Appetit, Food and Wine, and the Anaheim Ducks. Most of his other waking hours are spent surfing and making music.
